Wood Types

All wood specifications refer to the “face” of all products unless customer has ordered hand selected wood and select quality woods.

Alder

Alder will have a wide open grain, reddish brown in color. Burl, pin knots, and slight color variations are acceptable. Trace amounts of sap wood and/or mineral streaks are acceptable. Panels are constructed with reasonable color and grain match. Doors and panels should have no large open knots. Small knots may be filled. There are natural color variations in alder that do not present a problem in most situations. Alder is not color matched unless a special order request is made.

Alder (Rustic)

Furniture grade rustic alder will have a variety of characteristic knots and blemishes that contribute to the rustic nature of the wood. Loose knots are not acceptable. Solid knots may occasionally loosen up over time and may be glued back in by the customer. Knots and natural voids will not be filled. Color is generally similar and no attempt is made to color match components or pieces.

Special Note: Flat panel rustic alder material has inconsistent knots and voids that are often filled with filler at the factory. Flat panel doors, drawer fronts and small raised panel doors may not include knots in the panels.

Ash

Some color variations are acceptable within the cream to light brown range. Medium dark areas or large mineral streaks are unacceptable. Mineral streaks are only acceptable in trace amounts. Burl and pin knots are acceptable. Panels will have reasonably matched color and grain. Wood should not have any large or open knots. Small knots may be filled.

Cherry

Sapwood is acceptable in trace amounts. Some color variation, burl, pin knots and gum pockets are acceptable. Panels have reasonable color and grain match. Since cherry oxidizes in sunlight and darkens, care should be taken in storage or dark areas will appear where  there is exposure to sunshine. Wood will not have any large or open knots. Small knots may be filled.

Hickory

Hickory has a very wide range in colors and the material is not selected for color match. Solid knots are acceptable. Wormholes and small open knots are simply part of the nature of hickory and add to its rustic appearance. Any grain matching or color matching will be limited to stock on hand and variations may be wide.

Mahogany

Slight color variations are acceptable, as are pin knots. Wood should not have any large or open knots. Small knots may be filled.

Maple, Hard (Stain Grade)

Brown heartwood and mineral streaks are only acceptable in trace amounts. Slight color variations may occur and are acceptable. Built panels will be reasonably matched for color and grain. Wood should not have any large or open knots. Small pin knots are acceptable.

Maple, Hard (Paint Grade)

There will be no color or grain matching. Beech, maple, birch, cherry or other closed grain hardwoods may be used. Mineral streaks, wormholes, knot holes and open defects are filled with trowel grade filler. Use of bondo is acceptable.

Pine (Knotty)

Furniture grade knotty pine will have a variety of knots and blemishes that add to its rustic appearance. Loose knots are not acceptable but larger knots may loosen over time and may be glued back by customer. Knots and natural voids will not be filled. Color is generally uniform and no effort is made to match.

Red Oak (Select)

White sapwood and mineral streaks are acceptable only in trace amounts. Burl and pin knots are acceptable. Built panels will have a reasonable effort made to color and grain match. Select red oak is held to a higher color standard than natural red oak. Small dark knots may be filled and most other defects may be filled with trowel grade filler.

Red Oak (Natural)

Sapwood and mineral streaks are acceptable. Closed knots and pin knots are acceptable. Natural red oak will have variations that prevent color and grain matching and this is to be expected. Small knots will be filled and most other defects filled.

White Oak

Sapwood and mineral streaks are only acceptable in trace amounts. Burl and pin knots are also acceptable. Built panels will be reasonably color and grain matched but will not approach the uniformity of other stain grade woods. Small knots are filled.

Poplar

Poplar is used primarily as a paint grade product in molder and mitre applications. No color or grain matching is required. Mineral streaks, wormholes, knot holes and open natural defects are filled with trowel grade red oak filler. Use of bondo is acceptable.

Walnut
Black walnut is normally straight grained and is noted for beautiful grain character. The sapwood is creamy white and only acceptable in trace amounts. Walnut heartwood is a rich chocolate or purplish brown in color. Burl, pin knots and slight color variations are acceptable. Large voids and open defects are not acceptable. Built panels will have reasonable grain and color matching. Small knots and voids will be filled.
